This book took me one million years to read (aka 5 months) because my brain can only take academic non-fiction in small doses, and I wanted to take my time and make sure I understood everything. It tries to answer the question of why some societies dominated others and not vice versa (think why Europeans colonized North America and not the other way around). The author then explores in depth the different factors and reasons that led to some cultures developing faster than others. It's a very multi-faceted approach, and so well-argued that you can't help but see his logic. Not necessarily an easy read, but greatly improved my understanding of human history and how the world works.
