Super Mario Odyssey

⭐ 8.5/10

It was time to move on from past hurts. The Plumber and I are coming to terms. This game is good and I can't deny it, and thus I will use this review to proclaim that Mario does indeed have one good game.

It was interesting timing because I was playing two other 3D platformers at the same time as this one (reviews should come soon!). They are all great, but all so different. This one was certainly the most creative and tightest platformer, and when that is the genre title, obviously you have done something good. This game is amazing at introducing new mechanics and then utilizing them in different ways. Each stage is completely unique, rarely feeling like they were recycling old ideas or staying with the same mechanic for too long. The controls, passed down for 2 decades, are nearly flawless at this point, though with a massive overlook being the dive/pound button being the same. You have lots of unused bottons! These actions are important!

The worlds are all vibrant and beautiful. The music is charming and again totally unique level to level. I love the new system of collecting stars, just filling each level with a million of them and not kicking you out after each. It certainly makes each one feel less special, but I still think I'd take this over previous iterations. My initial complaint was going to be that this game was too easy, but it certainly provides enough challenge if you go looking for it.

I do still have complaints. I know it's not the point, but why can't they just have some sort of passable story? It feels nice to jump in and just play, but why can't I have just a little motivation outside of Bowser stole Peach and I need to save her? It really can't be that hard. I felt a little like cheap thrills just going in to get more stars. I want substance, Mario!

I know I had other things I didn't like, but I think it speaks to this games positives that I can't remember them right now. It's a fun, light game, but not one that I think is important to play or one where I'll remember how I felt playing it in years to come. It's good, but again if anyone makes this besides Nintendo I think the ratings come out less than perfect.
