Black Brother, Black Brother - Jewell Parker Rhodes

⭐ 9.5/10

(Originally written by Magdalene)

Donte and Trey are biracial brothers, but Trey presents as white, while Donte presents as Black. When they move to a fancy new school, Donte immediately gets labelled a troublemaker and even has the police called on him over very little. Donte is also fed up with school bully and fencing king Alan, so he decides to learn fencing himself and beat Alan at his own game.

I really enjoyed and appreciated this middle-grade book, for myself and for what it offers to the target audience. It addresses inequality, racial profiling, and injustice in easy-to-understand ways. It's also about inequality and racism in sports, and how sports can be beneficial for kids, which I honestly care about less, but I did like learning so much about fencing. Now that's a sport I can get behind!
