The sequel to what some people would say is the best movie of all time, and it was so good other people would say this is the best movie of all time. While I would not agree with that, I do love this movie. We get to watch Michael evolve alongside the origins of his father's empire and it really is amazing.
This movie is 45 minutes too long, but that really allows you to soak in this world. It starts with a big time jump from the first (which I love), and Michael is fully calloused at this point. The setting of this one feels pretty separated from the first as well, no longer in New York home his father built but expanding the empire across America. It subtly makes you feel like Michael is losing touch with his roots, and the values his father held.
My favourite parts here are the flashbacks to De Niro as a young Vito. Has anyone ever looked so handsome in a movie? And he somehow completely captures Brando's performance from the first, and you can truly believe they are the same person. Amazing stuff, as you begin to feel affection for someone even though he is becoming a mob boss, and it adds a lot of depth to the lives of his children.
There are many memorable lines and moments, and although the politics can get confusing I love the ride this movie takes you on. I think the first is better, but this is a more than worthy sequel, and an all time classic in its own right.
