Modern Family (Season 1)

⭐ 9.0/10

I was very resistant to this show, but it came time for Jess' choice for our next series, and after the flop that was New Girl I expected this to be hot garbage. It always struck me as ABC's take on an office-style show, and even Parks and Rec always rubbed me the wrong way in its similarities. But I am happy to report that this show is a delight. It maintains the fake-interview style of the office, but is a very different show.

The characters here are all just very well-written and unique, with a million relatable aspects. I'm sure ever person I know would see Phil and be reminded of their own dad in many ways (he is the best character btw), but at the same time the family situation is not very relatable (at least to me). The joke writing here is really good as well, and they use the season to pair off almost all sets of characters in interesting ways.

Anyways, I am not breaking new ground by saying this show is good, I was just very pleased that this first season was consistently funny. Minus points for annoying kid actors. I particularly hate when they make kids super mature or smart at young ages, and that is the entirety of Manny's character. Same with the middle daughter. Looking forward to some age and experience making them less annoying.
