This is one of the most confusing movies I have ever seen. After the movie ended, I had no idea what had just happened. All I knew that the movie was very well done, with two great performances from Jake Gyllenhaal and gorgeous cinematography, but I honestly had no idea what the movie was really even about. However, after some research, I can conclude that this movie is in fact, very very good.
Denis Villeneuve might just be one of the greatest directors working today. With this movie, he made an incredibly complex and confusing film, but once I started looking into it I realized that there were no questions left unanswered, and that every single line of dialogue has a purpose in the story.
I didn't know much about this movie going in, all I knew was that it was about a man (Jake Gyllenhaal) who sees his "look-alike" in a movie (also played by Jake Gyllenhaal), and attempts to track him down. While this is the general plot, you soon realize that there is something much more important going on.
This movie honestly made me feel so anxious and uneasy. The way that Villeneuve built tension (as he does in all of his movies) is so so good, not relying on violence or gore at all to make you uncomfortable. Throughout the movie you can tell that something is off. It was very well done.
I feel like if I were to watch this movie again with what I know I might be able to give it a higher score, but due to the incredibly complex plot I feel as if I wasn't able to fully enjoy it. It is still a very good watch, and I would probably recommend it!
