Zack Snyder’s Justice League

⭐ 8.0/10

I can totally see why this project got botched. A 4-hour, R-rated movie probably doesn't attract the audience that justifies spending hundreds of millions. But this movie is definitely much, much better than that utter monstrosity we saw a few years back. At the very least, it at least feels consistent not trying to wedge a Marvel movie into a serious one.

This movie REALLY benefits from being so long. While Marvel got tons of movies to develop characters, this movie at least gets the benefit of a few hours to develop new ones. By now we are also a bit more familiar with WW and Aquaman, so that probably helps in retrospect. But I think the biggest benefactor is the villain who was so incredibly underdeveloped in the first, and in this version you at least learn enough about him, and see him often enough to like, remember his name? Despite having several high octane action sequences, this movie still manages to feel more like a slow-burning character movie because of that crazy runtime.

This movie is definitely not perfect. I think Zach Snyder still totally missed on Superman, and I even thought the original got him better in a few instances. Batman is also terrible in this, though I totally admit I hate any Batman story outside of Gotham or that pairs him with supernatural enemies... Or allies. Affleck definitely makes a better Bruce Wayne than Batman. Otherwise I thought this movie was good enough. It is definitely stupid at times, but the stupidity is sometimes endearing (but also sometimes the stupidity is just stupid and should have remained cut). I liked it better or as much as basically any Marvel movie, though they are pretty different - which I think is a good thing. This movie definitely gives me hope for DC as I feel like it offers something cool and unique, though I've hated all the standalone DC movies in this universe. Is Zach Snyder really the best they can do for superhero movies that aren't the Marvel cut-and-paste style?

If this was the movie that originally came out, the score wouldn't have been so high. But being the ultimate DC fan, and having already exceptionally low standards, this movie was a really fun 4 hours for me.
