I had to follow up the autobiography with HBOs recent documentary that followed Ali's death. I'm glad this was made so that I could put images to everything I just read about. Man, this guy is so magnetic! The cadence with which he speaks, the grace with which he floats around the ring. I know I go overboard with my personal idols, but I just can't get enough of him right now. I really wish I would have been around when he was fighting, though again I'll admit there is probably a large possibility I would have been cheering against him, especially early in his career when he was such a shit talker.
This documentary was great with filling in the blanks left from the book. The book was published in 1977, essentially at the height of Ali's career, so this goes beyond that and tells of his late and post career. It really is tough to watch as you see his pride contribute to his downfall as this movie essentially plays out like a tragedy in many ways. It brought a few tears to my eyes, seeing him take a beating while he tries to make up for lost years.
This documentary is incredible. I really have no reason not to give it a ten other than that I liked the book a little more. Can't recommend it enough. Even if this topic is not one of interest for you, I think there is something to take for anyone watching this.
