Weezer - The Complete Works

⭐ 7.0/10

Well folks I did it. Over the past 72 hours I listened through Weezer's entire discography in order. I did not listen to one album more than once, so these will not be in depth reviews. Merely passing observations. Don't ask me why I did it, but here is my comprehensive review of the band weezer.

Weezer (blue album) [1994] 8.0 - Weezer starts out their career in amazing fashion. Influences of metal and grunge are rampant throughout the album (and their career), but with cheeky lyrics in what can only be described as a nerdy delivery. It's a weird combination, but one that works.

Best Track: Buddy Holly

Pinkerton [1996] 9.0 - This album rocks, and was my favourite of all their works. It's heavier musically than blue album and feels a lot more raw. The storytelling is what drives this album though. It features a fun cast of characters like El Scorcho, or tells the story of a man professing his love to his crush, only to find out she's a lesbian (Pink Triangle). It's fun, wild and loud and that is what I like.

Best Track: Butterfly

Weezer (Green Album) [2001] 6.0 - After a five year break in between releases, I was hoping for a bit more out of this one. Hash Pipe and Island in the Sun are smash hits, but the rest the album kind of flops.

Best Track: Hash Pipe

Maladroit [2002] 8.0 - This was the most pleasant surprise of the entire listen through. This album is raw, unfiltered rock n roll. It has no discernible hits just str8 vibes. musically it feels very 90's Green Day. It also features what I thought were Rivers most personal lyrics to date. Great album can't recommend enough.

Best Track: Keep Fishin'

Make Believe [2005] 4.5 - The theme of this album appears to be American idealism. A man dreaming of a better life. The concept is sweet, the execution is lacking. Weezer reverts into a more radio friendly sound here, and it just doesn't work for them. Outside of Beverly Hills there is no replay value.

Best Track: Beverly Hills

Weezer (Red Album) [2008] 9.0 - This is where things get weird, and in the best way. Up until this point, Weezer more or less cranked out the same album. Either heavy, loud nerd-rock, or quieter, radio friendly nerd-rock. This album throws away that formula and finally experiments. From the Bohemian Rhapsody-esque "The Greatest Man Who Ever Lived" to what I think is their best, pure rock track in "Everybody Get Dangerous," This album is phenomenal. Every track works.

Best Track: Everybody Get Dangerous

Ratitude [2009] 4.0 - Things also get weird here, just in a bad way. This album is wack y'all. There's a weezy feature, a Hindi track and songs called "I'm Your Daddy" and "Let It All Hang Out". Fricking weird dude.

Best Track: (If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To

Hurley [2010] 2.5 - It was after this album that Weezer took a four year break. It was needed. This album reverted back to radio friendly Weezer, but just so boring. At least Ratitude was frickin weird ya know? Hurley does have the best album cover however.

Best Track: Memories

Everything Will Be Alright In the End [2014] 8.0 - Weezer comes back in a big way here. This is what I would consider their only "concept album", which is among my favourite forms of albums. I think the album tackles the theme of a loss of innocence, played out through two stories both of a child's relationship with their father, and the storyline of a band breaking up. Maybe I'm right, maybe I was just tired after listening to my 6th Weezer album that day. Either way, I loved this album.

Best Track: The Futurescope Trilogy pt. I,II,III

Weezer (White Album) [2016] 5.0 - From here on out, none of Weezer's original music feels nearly as inspired. This album is a fun Summer-Rock album, and that's executed well. I just don't like this style and theme of rock. Every song fits this vibe, and it probably would get a higher rating driving down the coast highway than it did in my apartment building.

Best Track: King of the World

Pacific Daydream [2017] 3.5 - This album literally just feels like a companion to the White Album, so listening to summer pop music in my apartment didn't really land. This album had even less stand outs than White Album. Honestly pretty boring.

Best Track: Mexican Fender

Weezer (Teal Album) [2019] 8.0 - Hellllll yaaaaa this album rocks y'all. Weezer knocks it out of the park with their covers, I love every track here. Only reason it doesn't get a higher rating is because it is cover music and not original to them.

Best Track: Africa (duh)

Weezer (Black Album) 7.0 - The Final review, thank you if you made it this far. This album actually was a lot of fun. It's back to their poppier sound, but the content is just so fun you can't help but like it. It's not as good as some of their previous work, but it's a hell of a lot of fun.

Best track: Zombie Bastards

Overall, Weezer is an inconsistent, but quality band. I feel like they are a lot like Nickelback where you know what you are getting, but since they are fun instead of annoying or problematic, people are just down for it. After completing this listen through, I do not recommend listening to all of their albums at once. Don't do it. I never want to listen to them again right now. But I will because they are irresistible. I will also definitely review their two albums they have coming out later this year.

Comment down below which band I should do next!
