Sweet Home

⭐ 7.5/10

I was pretty invested in this Korean horror series right off the bat, mostly for the premise--it takes place almost entirely within a single grody old apartment complex, where some of the residents are turning into monsters for unknown reasons, while the same thing is happening all over the country (or world??) and everyone is barricaded inside to protect themselves from monsters outside, but also have to face the ones in the building. It's a large, ensemble cast, which I also like, and I found the first half of the season really compelling, but after that things started getting increasingly convoluted and more and more characters started dying. I have a low tolerance for characters death, especially when it comes to characters that I like, so my rating started dropping by the end. And there wasn't much resolution, with none of the problems really getting solved and more cropping up for what can only be a second season. I think it was a really good season, just not really my thing by the end, and I'm not sure I'd watch the next one just because it started deviating so much from the things I was watching it for.

Great effects, though, apart from a few really terrible-looking monsters, and pretty genuine horror at times. Definitely very very bloody, so don't watch it if that's not your thing. But I enjoyed the themes of survival, and what makes someone a monster. I'll be thinking about it for a long time.
