The Wolf Among Us

This is a Telltale Game - basically a choose your own adventure tv show without a whole lot of gameplay. It's definitely a unique way to tell a story and a cool way to use the video game medium and so i wanted to try it.

I thought the story was pretty interesting, though I'm not entirely sure this game style is my thing. The story is set in the Fabletown universe where characters from Fables have moved to New York City and use magic to disguise themselves as human, though they struggle to adjust. The game has you play as Bigby Wolf (Big Bad Wolf) who is a hard-boiled detective, and your task is to find a murderer. I love anything in the noir genre, so I really liked getting to take the reigns as a detective and make decisions, though I've heard most of the decisions lead to the same conclusion. Either way, the decisions feel pretty impactful in the moment and it was fun piecing together the mystery.

The really loved the art direction here, and I thought they got the dark, mysterious music just right. I thought the writing was pretty solid, but Jess called it lame so who can know. On the whole however, I think I wanted to like it more than I did. I don't love watching tv, and this felt like that. I was happy to do it, but I wasn't itching to get home to continue. Overall, I'm glad I tried it and hope to try a few more because they have some cool titles I'm interested in (Walking Dead?! Game of Thrones?! Batman??!!!!). Also I think it could be a fun thing to do with someone else or with a group if you have friends (or a wife) who likes cool stories, but I wouldn't know.
