Mexican Gothic - Silvia Moreno-Garcia

⭐ 9.0/10

I didn't like Moreno-Garcia's last book that much, but I'm glad I gave her this second try. This is very much a gothic novel, but set in Mexico, which gives it a different spin. It's creepy and sometimes unsettling, but never scary or horror-ish.

Noemi's recently-married cousin sends her a really alarming and weird letter from her new home, so she goes to check out what's going on. Noemi finds herself in a big, spooky house where nobody will tell her anything, and her cousin keeps talking about ghosts in the walls and people trying to poison her, and Noemi can tell there's something off about the family that lives there. It gave me strong Rebecca vibes, which is a book I love, so I was really into this. It was fast-paced, and the setting was really atmospheric. If you can handle Stranger Things, you will be fine with this.
