We Have Always Been Here: A Queer Muslim Memoir - Samra Habib

⭐ 8.5/10

(Originally written by Magdalene)

The subtitle pretty much tells it all. Samra's memoir is about her move from Pakistan to Canada as a child, trying to fit in, trying to escape from her arranged marriage at 16, then discovering her identity as a queer woman and how that fits in with her Muslim identity.

The title comes from her statement that queer Muslims have been invisible until now, but that they have in fact always been here. This memoir is pretty short, but I found the last quarter especially poignant. It's a Canada Reads contender, for good reason.
