Dragonflight by Anne McCaffrey

⭐ 7.0/10

(Originally written by Magdalene)

I wanted to read this because McCaffrey was one of the first female writers of SFF, and the first to win a Hugo and a Nebula. And many credit her books as the ones to get them into fantasy as kids. Also DRAGONS!

I really appreciated this cool blend of sci-fi and fantasy - dragons in space! And I can see why this book captured a lot of hearts, especially in the 60s when this would be been really new and fresh. I enjoyed a lot of parts of it, and what it represents. But there are many problematic elements for today's readers as well, especially concerning gender roles, sexism, and consent.

I'm glad I read it, particularly for my understanding of the history of fantasy novels, but I think the genre has improved since.
