Before They Are Hanged - Joe Abercrombie

⭐ 8.0/10

The second book in a trilogy, I found this one more exciting than the first. I was more invested in the main characters after spending a whole book with them, and there were some great twists that really paid off. I like the gritty world, which has a real ASOIAF feel, but the focus on just a couple key characters makes it less about the world building and more about the character arcs. The weight of history that is constantly present in ASOIAF is almost completely absent here (with the exception of one character), and although I love intricate worlds it makes this an easier read.

If you are a fan of ASOIAF or the Gentleman Bastard series, I would really recommend this one. Feels like a middle-ground between the two.
